I have a similar chart that works nicely for tracking headcount, but its a bar chart instead of a line chart. I'm sure it would work the same if you chose a different chart style.
In your view, you will need at least two fields: Date field and Type field (whatever you are measuring).
On the Chart Format tab, place the Date field and Type field in the horizontal (x-axis) with the date field being first. Click the checkbox on both to Group By.
On the Vertical (y-axis), place the Type field and measure with COUNT.
