This article lists the file types that can and cannot be uploaded to Image, Document, and Attachments fields in TrackVia.
Accepted File Types
Image fields accept: .jpeg, .jpg, .gif, and .png.
Document fields accept most common file formats — for example, Word documents, PDFs, spreadsheets, and video clips — except for the blocked formats listed below.
Attachments fields accept up to 25 files per field, which can be a mixture of accepted types (images, PDFs, Word docs, etc.).
File size limit: Individual files are limited to 40 MB across all upload field types.
Blocked File Types
For security reasons, the following file formats cannot be uploaded to Image, Document, or Attachments fields on a form. These are predominantly executable, script, and system file formats:
.ade, .adp, .app, .appx, .appxbundle, .apk, .asp, .aspx, .asx, .bas, .bat, .cab, .cer, .chm, .cmd, .cnt, .com, .cpl, .crt, .csh, .der, .diagcab, .dll, .dmg, .exe, .fxp, .gadget, .grp, .hlp, .hpj, .hta, .htc, .inf, .ins, .isp, .iso, .its, .jar, .jnlp, .js, .jse, .ksh, .lib, .lnk, .mad, .maf, .mag, .mam, .maq, .mar, .mas, .mat, .mau, .mav, .maw, .mcf, .mda, .mdb, .mde, .mdt, .mdw, .mdz, .msc, .msh, .msh1, .msh2, .mshxml, .msh1xml, .msh2xml, .msi, .msix, .msixbundle, .msp, .mst, .msu, .nsh, .ops, .osd, .pcd, .pif, .pl, .plg, .prf, .prg, .printerexport, .ps1, .ps1xml, .ps2, .ps2xml, .psc1, .psc2, .psd1, .psdm1, .psl, .pst, .py, .pyc, .pyo, .pyw, .pyz, .pyzw, .reg, .scf, .scr, .sct, .sh, .shb, .shs, .sys, .theme, .tmp, .url, .vb, .vbe, .vbp, .vbs, .vhd, .vhdx, .vsmacros, .vsw, .vxd, .webpnp, .website, .ws, .wsc, .wsf, .wsh, .xbap, .xll, .xnk
What If I Need to Share a Blocked File?
If you need to make a blocked file type available to users, common workarounds include:
- Compressing the file into a .zip archive before uploading
- Storing the file in an external system (e.g., a cloud drive) and adding its URL to a Link field on the record
Which Characters Are Kept in Upload File Names?
Document and Attachments fields keep file names written in non-Latin characters, such as Chinese and Japanese. A file uploaded as 月次報告.pdf shows as 月次報告.pdf on the record, and it downloads with that same name.
Supported characters include Simplified Chinese, Traditional Chinese, Chinese punctuation, and full-width characters. File names are kept the same way whether you upload in TrackVia or through the TrackVia API.
TrackVia replaces these characters in a file name with an underscore (_):
- Emoji. For example, a😀b.pdf is saved as a_b.pdf.
- Very rare characters, such as some historical or personal-name characters.
- Invisible characters and line breaks, such as the narrow space macOS adds to some screenshot file names.
Note: Files uploaded before this change keep the underscores in their names. To get the original file name back, upload the file again.
