how can I change a field type without losing data in the current field? I want to change a "Date and Time" field to just a "date" field.

  I don't believe field conversions is feature in the application (I've looked/asked also).
  The only option I'm aware of is to:
  1) Create a new date field
  2) Export all your records including the date/time field, plus a unique record ID
  3) Convert the date/time field to just date (in Excel)
  4) Import back into the new Data field
  5) Delete the old field
