Pie Charts

This article is specific to the updated TrackVia UI released in Fall 2026

A Pie Chart is a circular graph that shows how categories make up a whole. Each category is a slice, and the size of that slice shows its share of the total.

Note that you can click on a "slice" of the pie to remove it from the total, and the chart will automatically update to reflect the change.

When to Use a Pie Chart

• When you are showing parts of a single whole, expressed as proportions or percentages
• When the data is nominal and the data set is small
• When you have roughly 6 categories or fewer, so every slice stays readable
• When one factor is being split across categories, rather than several factors compared at once

When to Avoid Using a Pie Chart

• If the data set is large, since the detail collapses into slivers
• If you have more than 6 categories, since each added slice makes the chart harder to read
• If you want to show a trend over time, a Line Chart is more suitable
• If the slices are close in size and the exact comparison matters, a Non-Stacked Column Chart is more suitable

Example Use Cases for Pie Charts

1. Customer segmentation — the breakdown of customer types by demographics such as age, income, or location
2. Budget allocation — how a total budget is distributed across departments or project categories
