This article is specific to the updated TrackVia UI released in Fall 2026
A Lanes (Kanban) view displays records as cards grouped into vertical lanes, with each lane representing one value of either a dropdown field or relationship field in which users can only make one selection.
For example, you may have a Lanes (Kanban) view with the vertical lanes representing the various options from a dropdown field (e.g. "Status", "Project Stage", or "Priority Level") and cards can be dragged from one lane to another to update that field directly from the board.
When to Use a Lanes (Kanban) View
- When records move through a defined set of stages, and where a record sits in that process is the most important thing to see
- When the grouping field has a small, fixed set of values (~3-6 lanes) so the whole board fits on screen
- When users need to update a record's stage quickly and often, since dragging a card across the Kanban board is faster than opening and editing each record
- When you want to spot pile-ups at a glance, such as a lane holding far more cards than the others
- When a team works the process together and needs a shared picture of what is in flight
When to Avoid Using a Lanes (Kanban) View
- If you need to compare many fields across many records at once, a Grid view is more suitable
- If the grouping field has a large number of possible values, since the Kanban board becomes a long horizontal scroll
- If records do not belong to a stage or category at all, and there is no meaningful way to group them into lanes
- If the view holds a very high volume of records, as lanes become too tall to scan
- If you only need a count per stage rather than the individual cards, a chart is more suitable
Example Use Cases for Lanes (Kanban) Views
- Tracking work orders through lanes such as Submitted, In Progress, On Hold, and Complete
- Managing a project pipeline by phase, with cards dragged forward as each phase finishes
- Triaging incoming requests by priority so the team can see what needs attention first
