Gauge Charts

Gauge Charts are a single-value chart type. A Gauge Chart displays one metric as a needle or filled arc along a defined range, usually with a target or threshold marker, so viewers can instantly see where that value stands relative to the goal rather than reading an exact number off an axis.

When to Use a Gauge Chart

• When you have one key metric that matters more than any breakdown of it
• When that metric is measured against a defined target, threshold, or acceptable range (e.g. a completion rate against a goal)
• When you want an at-a-glance status read on a dashboard, where the question is "are we on track?" rather than "by how much?"
• When the metric has a meaningful minimum and maximum (such as a percentage, or a capacity used out of capacity available)

When to Avoid Using a Gauge Chart

• If you need to compare multiple categories to each other, a Non-Stacked Column Chart is more suitable
• If you need to show how a value has trended over time, a Line Chart is more suitable
• If the metric has no natural upper bound or target, since the arc's range would be arbitrary
• If you are placing many of them side by side to track many metrics at once, as a table or a set of summary numbers will be easier to scan
• If precision matters more than status, since a Gauge Chart is read by position, not by exact value

Example Use Cases for Gauge Charts

1. Tracking the percentage of inspections completed against a monthly compliance target
2. Showing current capacity utilization against total available capacity
3. Displaying progress toward a quarterly sales quota
